Army size

I am busy trying to work out an army for Usk. I had been led to believe that AoW armies were meant to be a touch bigger than DBM armies.

My first attempt at an army for Usk ended up with 15 BG's and a goodly number of bases totalling 799 points. As a matter of curiosity I decided to work out the DBM points. I assumed that general elements were paid for as the normal general type for the army and plugged the numbers into my spreadsheet.

The result,

399 AP

Still it is 43 mounted and 262 foot figures which is a reasonably sizeable force I suppose.

It will be interesting to get everyone to do this. See which armies are more and which are less under AOW. You donbt get 15 wb(F) for a Reg Kn(S) in AOW. But then the Wb have a chance and are rather potent against a variety of things.

OK, here's the competition. Given the information above, guess what Hammy's army is.

Hmm, looks like I may well have to use that army after all 8)

The points system really is quite different from DBM, so the DBM value of an 800 point AoW army varies wildly.

As examples:

The army I have worked out for Usk for one of the local lads (at his request) would only cost 344 DBM AP (including on-element-cost of 4 irregular generals).

One of the armies I am itching to try myself would cost 454 DBM AP (including on-element-cost of 4 regular generals)

Even allowing for the differential cost of irreg/regular generals that is still 70 AP difference.

Last weekend Simon Clarke was saying that his experience was that you needed more figures for AoW than DBM - he and his play test partner sometimes didn't have enough from their DBM armies to field 800AP of AoW.

The only DBM army I have ever fielded is my EIR, at 450AP (on the button). I've just fielded them at 801 points in AoW.

The AoW army had: +6 Legionaries, +1 Auxiliary Archer (5 Ps(0) in DBM, 6 Archers in AoW), -2 Auxiliary foot, -4 Light Horse, -1 Light Bolt Shooter.

So they had exactly the same number of bases, though different numbers of figures (AoW had +18 foot, -8 mounted, -1 artillery).

Sid thought that the AoW army looked far more scary than the DBM army! I have to, I did prefer the shape of the AoW army myself...expediency seems to dictate fewer blade in DBM, but there appears to be a good incentive in AoW to make the army look like it ought.

One of our objectives met then - a proper looking Consular army with the right mix where the legionaries are well woreth having.

The problem is that we have optimised 'DBM' armies. The last Alexandrian army we used needed 40 pike. When was the last time you saw 40 pike in a DBM army ?.. 25mm 400pt excepted

Our Usk army is ~450 DBM points!? :?

Since DBM 3.1 you do see more PK. I have used 40+ Pk at 400 AP in three 15mm competitions, Cork, Pisa and Roll Call. At 450 AP we used 40 Pk(I) and 12 Pk(X) at the Leicester doubles in 2006 and 44 Pk(S) at 500 AP the year before.

Bully.....

That said my first AoW army (before the more recent change in points) was 540 AP of DBM medieval French. 24 bases of Superior knights mmmm

Ok, so who can find the 800 point army worth the most DBM points? Must have at least 1 FC and 2 TCs. (Treat as 60 DBM AP if regular, 30 if Irregular)

How about

Timurid

FC
2 x TC
20 bases of Cavalry, drilled, armoured, superior, bow, sword
18 bases of LH, undrilled, unprotected, average, bow, sword
4 bases of elephants
16 bases of MF, undrilled, unprotected, poor, bow
6 bases of Mob

Total AoW points 800, DBM AP 504

Or, if you are determined to get the most DBM bang for your buck:

Tatar

FC
2 x TC
64 bases of LH, drilled, unprotected, average, bow, sword
12 bases of MF, undrilled, unprotected, poor, bow

Total AoW points 796, DBM AP 544

And the least DBM AP... ?

A good challenge. I think we should allow entries for a side comp at Usk. Non attendees can play to.
