Beta Tournament

Hi guys

we're going to have another attempt at getting a beta tournament up and running. This one launched Wednesday lunchtime so gives you a little time to get ready. We want this to be a quick 4 round tournament. The scenarios are all small and intended to complete in an evening. It's probably best to only take part if you are in the UK/Europe time zone or able to play when those players are in their evening times as you'll not be able to get enough turns back and forth unless you're setting the evening aside to compete. Rounds 3 & 4 are paired games on Saturday & Sunday.

To take part you will need to download an update that we'll be releasing in the next day or so. This will point you to the test server so you wont be able to play your current games. What we suggest is that you make a copy of the entire Program Files\Slitherine\FoG folder and use this as your test version. Run this and update it with the mini patch (instructions to folllow when it is available). When you want to play a tournament game use teh updated version, when you want to continue existing games run the normal version. When the test tournament is complete just delete the entire folder to clean things up.

To join the tournament login in here and click join http://www.slitherine.com/tournaments_test/fog_pc

This test is to check the scoring system rewards wins properly, that drop outs are removed from the draw and that games that did nto complete have fair scores awarded. There are a maximum of 16 slots available in this tournament so grab your place before they disappear!

If we have any technical issues and have to push back the start times we'll let you know ASAP.

We've only got 2 people signed up so far - we'd really appreciate your help testing this. Even if you cant commit to the whole thing it will help us test the drop out system is working. If you can spare the time we'd really apprecaite your help!

Okay, I'm in.
Though to whoever draws me as opponent in one of the first two rounds, please don't be disappointed if I fail to complete the games.
Spare time has become something of a rare commodity these days.

Ok the beta version is ready!

For anyone who is particpating follow these instructions

1) Make a copy of your Field of Glory install folder. Rename it to FoG Beta Tourney or somethign like that so you know what it is.
2) Run the game from the fieldofglory.exe. Do not use the shortcut. The shortcuts will point to your original game (even though this is a copy) and this is not what you want to do!
3) At the main menu press the ` key on your keyboard. On PC it is just below the ESC key at the top left. Not sure where on Mac but when you hit it you'll see a command window appear.
4) In the command window enter the following without the qutoes "update-source tourney". This tells your game to check for beta updates for the tournament until you exit the game.
5) Click check for updates from the main menu. You should see a new file 1.4.5. Download and install it.
6) Now when you run the game you'll see 1.4.5 in the bottom left and when you go to multiplayer you'll be on the test tournament server.
7) Your tournament games will appear on your games list when the tournament kicks off. Not if we have an odd number someone will get a BYE in the first round so have no opponent.

Any problems or questions please post to the open beta forum - http://slitherine.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=97

Just a point Ian, going through the steps listed above, the original version of FoG is updated with the Tourney data, not the new temporary one.

I don't think this is a major issue, but we need to be careful later when we are deleting the unwanted trial version!

If you follow the steps the original will not be effected . You must have run from the shortcut to take you to the orginal game - Dont use the shortcut! :)

Unless I'm missing something but it worked for me!

Worked fine for me as well, once I got past the whole ASCII problem.
Got a 1.4.4 original and a 1.4.5 Beta running simultaneously.

EDIT: Something else just occurred to me.
Will the SysTray Tool detect Beta games or is it strictly for the original?

No it wont detect them as they are on the test server.

The tourney has already started, hence it's closed for new players.

Ah, I'm too late then.

So how does the new software work? What new features are there, can we set up tournaments amongst friends and all that, or is it a centralised thing for official tournaments?

I don't remember reading any details about this update.

This one is complete but the first real one is now live! See the announcement or just read this:

At last the tournament system is complete!

The first official tournament has a Carthage theme and will be starting on the 21st January. It is a 4 round tournament with 3 days to complete each round. It will complete on the 2nd February where the winner willbe announced and awarded a $10 gift certificate... ooooh! All games are paired and medium sized maps have been selected to give a good chance to resolve games.

This tournament runs on the live server using your current version of the game. You do not need to download anything to particpate - just go here and sign up - http://www.slitherine.com/tournaments/fog_pc

We have limited it to 32 players because well, its the first one and you're never sure its all going to work until it does ... :)

If this one goes to plan we'll have larger tournaments kicking off very soon!

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask!
