Hi all,

As I'm down to only two massive piles of lead to paint it's obviously time to look for a new army
I want a streamroller cavalry/Kn/Cata type army with very little foot. But I plan on using one of the Army Painter matt plate mail primer sprays to speed the painting up. I would prefer to spray as much of the army as possible and just add things like plumes, trim etc. So what army fits the bill? Some medieval one with horse barding? or maybe Persian-ish cataphract?

Thanks for the tip, looks like Tibetans will fit the bill perfectly.

Any recommendations on figure manufacturers? I've had a quick look and Khurasan seem to be the best. Anyone know what extra charges you have to pay importing them from the U.S. is it just 20% VAT you have to add?

Exactly, it is the 20% plus shipping rates. You can try to ask if any local retailer sells them to get a better price.

There is a good chance that you will pay import duty too and a royal mail handling charge... Tmp has lots of posts on this topic. in my experience ordering overseas can be down to a matter of luck. Sometimes postie will leave it on the doormat sometimes not

I don't know if this applies to Army Painter, but I found with Humbol metallic spray enamel paint that the metallic bits can come through any other enamel paint you put on top. You might like to do a test first.

Hmm thats what I was worried about, could make them very expensive. Sadly I don't think Khurasan has distributors.

The Army Painter sprays are coloured acrylic primers so you don't have that problem but thanks for the thought.

I've ordered from US and the taxman never bothered with them at all.

Most countries have a threshold before customs and the taxman can be bothered filling out the paperwork to chase you. Break up your order into small amounts. Why not contact customs to find out want the threshold is then make sure your orders are underneath it. The one really good thing about Khurasan is they do not have a fixed postage charge, they postage is all calculated weight for each order so it make smaller orders attractive.

at least coming into the US I have never had customs bother with my stuff.

What you have to do is ask the stateside supplier to understate the value of the goods---Some guys in USA are aware of this and ship in smaller parcels but when you order £200 worth of figures and get a £50 customs charge it just hurts really badly. I think Khurasan are one with a bit of savvy because he sent my Tibetans in 2 separate packages--Funnily enough one package came and had only a few horses and the day after I had sent a query, about 100 horses turned up in another package.

Khurasan's website specifically says:
"Please do not ask me to misrepresent the price of your delivery as this is against the law in the US and would subject me to liability."

A lot of American companies have got into trouble for doing just this. I myself own a small miniatures company, and I will not falsify such information. It's just too risky. For some reason, the postal service has been cracking down extra diligently in the last year or so.

Before buying Tibetans try writing an even half-decent list for the army. If you play tournaments, it's cack.

If you want drilled cataphracts, Palmyran is a much better army.

For the real heavy metal plate guys, you want a post 1450AD knight army. There's a few that can have a lot of knights, such as Polish, the German armies (which also tend to have armoured infantry), arguably a late Serbians, Castillian, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'd kinda given up on Tibetans due to the cost of importing them. Which is a shame as the models look great. As for tournaments playing DBM put me off them for life
