What have a done wrong?

I Downloaded the v1.12 patch...does this thing have an .exe file, or do you just slap the contents into your slitherine folder that has the same folders and filenames? That's what I've done. So, CEAW runs and says it's the gold edition...the movie works and everything.

Then, I install the v1.06.exe file. The first time, just when I thought it wasn't going to work, it started to work. But then my fighter units in Holland started to disappear...on the first one, I thought it was enemy action and my own inattentiveness. On the second occasion, I knew there was something wrong. So, I restarted the game I get the following chain of events:

Bear in mind I'm using a 26" monitor.

1. Game starts up once I hit the shortcut and I get a full white screen with a small bar of black running down from the top of the left edge.
2. Then I get the little popup that says "does not support 1024X768"...or whatever...still no movie. And clicking on the check on the popup yields no result...but I can hear the game music in the background.
3. I have to hit ctrl+alt+delete to minimise this massive whiteness. And now I can click on the check mark for the 1024..blah blah and make that disappear.
4. Now, I can minimise by hitting alt+tab, at least. But, I'm still confronted by this masive field of whiteness while the game music goes on and on. Bear in mind, it's been at this point for the entire time that I type this missive.

Please enlighten this not-completely-computer-literate person. Thank you in advance. If I can make it work tomorrow, I'll thank you again.

"Then, I install the v1.06.exe file." By v1.06 do you mean the GS v1.06 with the installer? If so, when you ran it did you select the path to where your version of 1.12 (i.e., the vanilla game) is installed or did you use the default path?
