French Italian Wars list has this designator for the Landsknechts, and I can't seem to find any details about how it works.
For example, with 12 bases of pike and 2 bases of heavy weapons, do the bases flank the three columns of pike? Or do the two bases remain together?
Thanks!

I seem to get most of these wrong.... but I will keep trying!

IMHO the HW bases are columned up with the pike, popping out during combat to extend the frontage and ideally count as an overlap....

hope Ive got it right this time!

Jon, you are correct. Anything else violates the allowable formations rules.

Pete, please note that provided that they are not in the front rank, they still count towards the 4 ranks deep for a file so best to keep them at the back (i.e. 5th or greater rank, preferably of the outside files) else they usually can't expand - if the are in ranks 2-4 of the file they often are contributing to a PoA. If you have the appropriate flank cover, sometimes going with the BG 2 files wide, each 7 bases deep is a valid ploy, especially against an army with mounted and Medium / Heavy Artillery

yes, this makes sense . . .

Thanks guys!
This goes along with what I had understood was the actual tactical practice; to be at the rear of the formation and then exploit an opportunity to get on the flank of the opposition, or offset that move by the enemy.
Parked at the rear the will be.
