help?

Everything was working fine. Then, suddenly, a problem. When I click to open the game a window very briefly appears but then immediately goes away. That's it -- nothing else opens. I recognize the window from when the game did open successfully. It was the first window which would appear but then others would appear right afterward. The window is small, black, with DOS-style writing on it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry you are having problems. If it was working and them stopped obviously something on your PC has changed which caused the issue. It's very hard for us to say what that might be unfortunately. Maybe a corrupt file or a new piece of software that conflicts with the game such as a virus checker. I'd suggest removing anything you added after it stopped workign and seeing if that helps.
Before installing again try uninstalling and completely deleting the program files\Slitherine\CEAW folder and see if that helps.

Related question: Do you edit/mod the game for your own use, or have you tried manually installing other game mods/files or even past versions of the scenario files? Reason I ask is because the game will fail on load when there are *.scn files in the ..\data\scenario\ folder besides the default "1939.scn", "1940.scn", "1941.scn", "1942.scn", "1943.scn", and "1944.scn" files. Similar things will happen when you start the game if there is an error in any of the editable game files like "general.txt", "leader.txt" etc..

CHeck out:
viewtopic.php?p=112818#112818 and try deleting your settings.txt file as described in the thread.

Nope. I've done none of this. This is the only game I've bought in years and I'm too computer illiterate to try any of the edit/mod stuff you mention.
