Please can you try downloading the update again. When you see the message "could not download the update", there should be a button that says "Copy Details". Please click the "Copy Details" button, then paste the contents of the clipboard here. This will help us determine what's wrong.

1. What version of Mac and OSX do you have?
2. Are you using wireless to download the updates?
3. Have you tried a cable connection to your wireless router?
4. Try placing the mouse nearer the wireless router.

Some Mac's seem to time out the wireless connection very quickly unless they have a strong connection to their router (moving it closer improves the signal).

It could as simple as that.

If not if we have your model and O/S we can try to replicate your set up.

Just a check, but when you did a direct connection did you disable wireless as well, to ensure the Mac didn't attempt to use it?

Cheers
