On page 165 of rule book it states that Cavaliers 'can get carried away in the pursuit of defeated enemy.'
This would suggest a penalty in the CMT to stop a pursuit.
However, apart from being cheaper than Determined horse I can find no difference anywhere.
Am I missing something?

Yes, you are. See page 140, first column, last bullet, and second column , first bullet. Cavaliers MUST continue to pursue if they are in contact with routers (no roll allowed to break off) (DH may roll) and must pass a test to stop pursuit even after losing contact with the routers (automatic for DH).

Also note that (unless reduced to 1 base) autobroken troops are not removed from the table until all pursuers have ceased pursuing. So there is therefore the potential for Cavaliers to pursue a long way.

Oddly I have yet to have my cavaliers pursue for long at all, either their target autobreaks and then is removed for losing its last base, or our cavalry melee's take so long that the game is decided by the infantry in the center, before the Cavaliers can even break their opponents.
