Shock Troops

We may be in a minority but it seems bizarre that so many troop types are classed as Shock Troops. Pikemen, offensive spearmen and legionaries and all lance armed cav have been given the same desire to charge as Medieval knights.

Generally if you have these troop types you will want to get stuck in - but the current rules can lead to some unusual situations.

In last night's game MF Impact Foot were defending a hedge in a field and facing off HF Impact Foot still in the open. A proper Mexican stand off. The HF passed their CMT not to charge in but the MF failed theirs and had to charge out into the open.

Would the game suffer if you removed the Shock Troop designation from all but the most headstrong troop types?

On a similar but linked theme, Shock Troops can burst through friends to charge enemy if they fail a CMT not to charge. But they can't elect to interpenetrate friends in a charge. Why not?

Pete,

The shock troop rules are pretty fundamental and historical. Its not the same chance as charging with medieval knights really as the foot troops only charge foot troops.

The troops behind the hedge were, I expect, not in open ground.......they therefore do not charge out fro behind the hedge IIRC as the move connot be made completely in open ground.

We noticed the burst through issue as well and in the next version shock troops are likely to be allowed to burst through some friends if charging.

There may well be some tweaking to be done on shock troops and when they charged. WE have been focused on a major redraft to make the document more use friendly and will get to it in the new year.

Cheers
