There will be something at both Cold Wars and H'con. Not sure of specifically what just yet. Watch this space for more information. There will also be FoG:AM at both cons as well, so your FoG plate will be full.

Hi I am Bob Nedwich and I am coordinating FogR for Cold Wars and Historicon, Mike Kelley will be coordinating Fall-In 2011. The Cold Wars FogR schedule has been in the PEL for months now, For Historicon there will be a Theme for Early armies and an Open for Doubles. We will discuss the parameters at Cold Wars and of course always check the convention PEL for final details. Please send any particular tournament questions to me at
nedwich@aol.com and use the forum for rules and list questions. See you soon. Bob

Having a theme already?

I thought my Early TYW Swedes would be done by coldwars, but no.. So i was going to use them for Historcon. I think a theme for a game that has not even been out for a year is a bit.. Foolish. The first book out was wars of religion, so i would imagine alot of people started with that book.. Not everyone has multiple armies this early into FOG:R.. I am wondering what kind of turn out there will be.

My other two friends do not have early armies either.

I'll first start by saying thank you to Bob for stepping up to do the thankless job of running these tournaments and I know that you can't make everyone happy all of the time.
Ok, in regard to a theme at Historicon I would choose a different word besides "foolish." I'll go with premature

I know that there's no official "etiquette" here, but typically themes do not coincide with doubles tournaments and there have always been open tournaments (at least to my knowledge.) A one year advance warning for themes is also fairly typical, though I know that we were in the same situation with FOG A/M in 2008.
Oh, and yes, I am one of the aforementioned friends. Andy and I are a bit frustrated with the knowledge that our first renaissance armies won't be usable for another year. My first reaction to the news of the planned format for Historicon would have received at best a PG-13 rating. I made great efforts to keep this post both clean and inoffensive
Cheers,
JF

I'd also join the chorus as well. I'd prefer an open - that is probably the best bet for a new rule set where people are lucky to have one army painted.
Also, I think these discussions need to happen here on the forum and not via e-mail so everyone can have their opinion.

Sorry for my little out burst.. But as Jeff said i am frustrated..

I also find it curious that the tournament details were not posted on the forum.. As i see most other tourneys are posted here.. Someone new to the game could see where it was being ran and what format.

Without stealing Bob's thunder I'll just say that Cold Wars was a well run tourney with a dozen or so players turning up with 15 & 25mm armies.
Hats off to Bob & a thank you for a job well done. I doubt I will be at H-con or Fall-In this year, but can recommend a Nedwich run tourney to everyone.

Good

This will be my first Historcon in 7 years.. Well, this will be my second historcon. I do not get to travel much, cept within the state of Ohio. I thought i was gonna be able to make Cold Wars for the first time.. But alas not.. My Fog:R army was not ready, not to mention none of my friends were going.

Names, I want names
Ok, sorry. Glad to hear it. I hope this will give incentive for others to get into FoGR. I feel there must be folks out there taking a "wait and see" approach and while 12 players isn't earthshaking, it's more than I would have expected considering that there were a number of folks who would have played but were unable to make it to Cold Wars this time around.
Well, back to painting now. Gotta keep Andy off my back

You are far too pessimistic. I think FoG R is going to do very well. I think the main delay is the army books aren't all out yet. Personally I have really only fought TYW and ECW type armies. Don't have a sense yet for the non central european armies yet. They look...vulnerable.

IIRC. My Later Imperial Austrians & a Polish Commonwealth were the only 2armies on view not from the Wars of Religion book.
My arquebus armed troops did not suffer as badly as I feared they might do to musket armed troops, although in my 1st game 2 of my Later Tercios broke through melee rather than shooting casualties.
What I found was that Lh bow can be very effecgive on the wings against other mounted battlegroups, true they don't kill, but they cause tests. In both my games my bow armed troops caused morale drops before my cuirassier charged in to rout the enemy. Command shot are also vunerable to bow fire from a morale standpoint.

Just for fun a few weeks ago i tried a Swiss army, the keils are nasty against the later 6 stand battle groups of the later TYW.. We did play a few things wrong, but i think the early armies do have a good chance against the later ones.. I am looking forward to the late 1600's and the cities of gold armies.

I agree that the earlier tercios and kiels can be very competitive with the pike and shot crowd, so we don't have a problem with Opens - yet. The real test will come when the bayonet armed muketeers arrive on the scene. Under DBR such armies quickly drove all others out of the Opens as the earlier pike and shot guys just weren't competitive.

Remember that if MF mudket & bayonet lose to either mounted or HF in the open they take a -1 on their cohesion test

True Paul. But with 6-8 shooters who also function as pikes in terms of taking away POAs from mounted, it may be difficult to get them to take those tests in the first instance.

No problem for my troops to hammer your bayonet armed shot Kevin, I'll just rely on you using the same lousy dice you had Saturday.
