Is the game really centered around people just defending?

I was reading the review over on Out of Eight

http://www.outofeight.info/2010/08/batt ... eview.html

and he mentioned that all people do is hunker down and wait for others to attack. Is that the trend most are seeing in the online game or does Slitherine plan on doing something to make people be more flexible and go on the offensive more often?

Just wondering before I get the game

Thanks

Depends on the scenario you are playing. Some require a fighting withdraw, some are very defensive for one side, others are very much engagement battles. I would say I have defended and been defending equally. You are better off using tactics that work though and if that means setting up a kill zone for the enemy to go into - well that is just good command and control/tactics. There is also some hunkering down waiting for reenforcements etc etc, I find the game very well presented with regards to different tactical usage of forces!

Well, that's not what everyone does, I just found out that's one strategy that seemed to work well for online matches, if memory serves.
Thanks for reading the site!

I've played a lot of good PBEM games now and I only had one guy bunker down on objectives. Everyone else were very aggressive in going after the victory points.

I only bunker down behind hills and palisades when being attacked by Hordes of Barbarians
and it has never worked :-(

heck unless the MP game puts me in a defensive mode, I move forwards win or lose. Most people I have played like action and action isn't sitting on your behind.

That review was made AUG 22, and I think that was a fair, because when the game first came out it did not have VP points multiplayer, that has been fixed since.

This is true. I haven't played the game since I finished the review.

Maybe you could try again and update your review?

The vast majority of games I've played have been advance to contact. The only one with an element of defend I can remember is the Bulge's Christmas Surprise and even then it's more of fighting withdrawal ... or maybe that was just me ;)

Cheers

After last patch release, ALL multiplayer scenarios have a timer and flag objectives, which means playing on the defensive is no longer a viable tactic in most of them. At least, first you need to consolidate your minimum requested objectives to win the scenario and then defend them...if you managed to get to them first, of course.

Try it out, lots of fun!

I've done 673 reviews. I don't want to start the avalanche.

Sad that someone like the original poster would pass on a game based on one review of the original release.

Reckon the OP must have bought the game ... he's got 10 games under his belt already

Just sitting and defending won't protect you from me.

Most terrain tends to be fairly readable. If I know you are there, I will lambaste that location with support fire and them move in an sponge up the mess.

I've never experienced a defensive posture that was ideal.

The best defense IS a good offense. The moment you surrender initiative, your loss is just a question of time.

There are a few maps where one side gets the high ground and the flags and all you have to do is just sit there and not move, support will not do a whole lot if you have your armor spread out.. Just saying some of the maps even with VPs are still very unbalanced. There is an editor but seems noone has done anything with it, other then single player scenarios, the tools are there there is just a lot of work involved.

We've not had feedback on unbalanced maps so please post any that you feel are off to tech support. Tweaking them is relatively easy. We need a consensus before we make any changes though.
