Hi all,
So, I've been working my way through the first campaign and getting along quite nicely thank you. I began Hold the Pass this evening whilst sitting relaxed and confident, a nice cuppa by my side. Needless to say, I got absolutely hammered!!!! I managed to hold on by the skin of my teeth until being wiped out with two turns to go. Ouch!!!! Once those Marders and Panzer IV's arrived, it was effectively game over. What a hard scenario that was. It was a real tension builder all the way through with me worrying about my deployment and all these new enemy units appearing each turn.
Anyway, I just thought I'd share my defeat with you all and to say that will go down in my gaming history as one of the most tense battles I've ever fought in a wargame. I was completely immersed.
Cheers,
Leaston

I think all those who post in other forums that this is a light wargame haven't made it past the tutorial.
Glad you're having fun.

You're absolutely right. It does look very much like a light wargame, but looks are certainly deceiving in this case. It's a shame if people are taking it at face value as it is an engaging game once you get into it. I like the way it ramps up the difficulty through the first few scenarios without overwhelming the player as some wargames tend to do.
After spending an age with the deployment phase in that scenario, I was fairly confident I could defend the objective. Within 6 or 7 turns it dawned on me that I was probably going to be in trouble later. At least I got that part right hehe
I am having fun. It's a real gem of a game and I'm looking forward to the expansion(s).

Agreed - this game really does have that 'special something'! It surpasses even my experiences playing Grandia (an RPG for the PS1. If a game can convince you that you are losing terribly when you are actually winning, that is an act of pure genius!)
I personally found Hold the Pass to be very easy. I had a tough little AT gun in a bunker on the top hill, and a few good dice rolls...
However, rearguard was very difficult for me. I was convinced from turn 1 (2PDR portee up in flames on the first move) until turn 20 (half a dozen units surrounding that last flag, only a truck sitting on it. He was supported by a supressed AT gun and some crummy infantry) That I was going to lose.
I think the AI was being nice to me though...nobody bothered removing the truck from it's position and I claimed a victory. I was shaking by the end of this game

Sometime is hard to win some scenarios, specially the ones where the AI must defend a position (and you lose usually because you ran out of troops).
Defence missions are waaaaay easier. You think you are losing because you are being terribly beaten but the AI usually have trouble when trying to capture flags and it´s not as agressive as it should be. Sometimes it even makes absurd moves or did not try to take undefended flags. So, sometimes, winning is not very satisfactory...you didn´t win due your bold tactics, it´s the AI who loses because it didn´t capture flags.
Would love to see some improvements in the AI to fix that...

Yeah I was breezing right through then first campaign the hit a brick wall with Reargaurd( I try to get all the achievements). Finally got them all on my third or fourth play through. The next two missions were quite a challenge as well. I still have yet to get all four achievements on Take the Hill, and it took me 5 play's to get all four on The Last Push.
For a suggestion I think they should show which achievements you have on each mission in the menu.

Yes, I'm surprised this hasn't been done yet. There is no real reward for completing the bonus objectives. I think there should be a medal for each, and a medal for doing them all in one game
As regards the AI, yes it is pretty bad at times, but I think it might have been adjusted (low aggression) for the first campaign, and steadily gets higher. I think the aggression affects the probability of the AI choosing to take the flag
