Rout path

I must not understand the programmed rout path.
The following situation occurred in a game. The battlefield is tilted east/west instead of north/south. A friendly unit routs due to missile fire. It has a rout path away from enemy and enemy is one hex away. Instead of taking the rout path away from enemy, it routs along a line of friendly troops, disordering all it routs through. All along this path enemy is one hex away. I thought this was just an odd result, so I moved a friendly unit on the second turn of rout to provide an exit away from the enemy, but the routed unit continued to rout along and through the line of friendly BGs, continuing to disorder each BG. Once again, the enemy BGs were opposite the friendly BGs and one or perhaps two hexes away from the routed BG and friendly BGs.
The only thing I can think is that the programmed rout path is always toward the friendly camp or original start side and does not consider where enemy are, except to avoid contact with any enemy BG.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?
