Suggestion: Artillery spotters

Indirect fire (mortars, rockets or guns) in BA is quite lethal and precise.

In several scenarios you could happily sit down and start shelling enemy positions form a safe distance. I´ve just won this way the Adrennes scenario where you have two Sherman Calliope tanks that i suspect were firing laser-guided rockets.

You can hit any square you want, even if no unit is directly observing it, which makes indirect fire way too powerful. You (as player) could see every inch of battlefield but units can´t so they can´t fire with such precission at something they doesn´t know is there.

I wonder if it would be interesting having artillery spotter units which need LOS to a target square in order to be able to fire mortars and such at it. You could also fire without need to have a LOS but firing would be innacurate or less effective.

To make things simpler maybe you could only need LOS with any kind of unit.

Two games come to mind that use spotters, Steel Panthers and Combat Mission.

I use mortars in my scenarios for the AI to substitute for off map arty. I need to figure out scripting someday.

I find that sometimes they are deadly and sometimes do nothing. Sometimes the splash damage is better than I hoped for.

Would FOs add to gameplay? Could the AI use them?

I see your point about any unit calling in arty but that is what the bonus buttons are for.

Rocket arty should be inaccurate.
