pursuit and dropping back bases

In a game last night my knights broke the enemy in front of them.

I only had two knights fighting and the unengaged knights had my own LF screening the last base from shooting.

A enemy
B my screening LF
K my knights

When A brioke and fled my knights rolled high enough to catch them

AABB
AA
KKKK

The issue was how to deal with the LF.
We initially I could only drop back one base to pass my own troops but we werent sure being a pursuit (and not a charge or evade).

It doesnt say anything in the pursuite rules other than you can drop back bases to pass friends in the way. We played it that I changed formation by dropping back 2 bases and knocking the bejesus out of A - and there was much rejoicing.

Was this correct?

FWIW I think you got it spot on.

P108 - 3rd bullet point. It says 'dropping back bases if necessary to avoid friends. The bold is mine but it is in the plural.

But perhaps what it should say is, '...dropping back bases if necessary to avoid friends it is not permitted to interpenetrate (see page 48 ).'

Best leave as is. A pursuit is an outcome move. As such, pursuers are required to drop back bases to avoid friends. Don't overcomplicate it with a bunch of "if-then" conditions.

It should read pural bases, as there can always be situations where there are more than one base behind one base WIDTH.......pike for example.

If you can interpenetrate them then it is not necessary to avoid them.

Mounted breaking off cannot interpenetrate. Chargers cannot interpenetrate voluntarily. Interpenetration is permitted for allowed troops in the maneuver phase, or when evading or routing. Sometimes an involuntary charge or an evade or rout will result in bursting through friends which they could not normally interpenetrate. Pursuers are not explicitly allowed to interpenetrate. They are allowed to drop back bases to avoid friends.

IMO pursuers cannot interpentrate. But then I'd have to read the rules

The rules are silent on this.

P47 - Interpenetrations - tells us only that chargers can't interpenetrate. The other banned interpenetrations that are listed by Gozerius are in the sections when they arise - eg mounted break offs.

So given the omission, one might reasonably assume that pursuers could interpentrate as per the list on P48?

Having said that I've alway played it that they can't - dropping back bases instead. Which was the question in the OP.

As written, it does appear to be a mandatory instruction. You will drop back to avoid friends.
