Going to try out ECW Parliament in our next battle in the never-ending struggle against the poodle.

Cuirassiers and Horse: How have they faired with carbines?

Inexpensive Carbineers can make good service in battle, but they are with most prudence employed in aid of the wings of Foot or as their reserve, or to augment the strength of the Horse of better quality. Before being likely overthrown by the impact and superior Quality of the Cavaliers, the Carbineers mayhaps deliver a single volley. Even where it presents or confusion or loss to the enemy, yet the Cavaliers who remain most oft strike undaunted with hands sure with Sword and Pistol.

A wise General asks not Carbineers to stand alone against Cavaliers save with the aid of Ground, the shelter of good Foot, or platoons of Shot mixed amongst them. This last expedient has proved a most salutary discipline. If opportunity present, the line of battle may be advanced so the Shot may deliver a volley with their muskets upon the flea-infested Poodlers yet just beyond Charge-distance, and yet two further volleys as the blackguards advance to the charge. A Cavalier allowed more brains than most will deny the Carbineers more than one volley. But their defense is not fire but the close support of the Shot, whereby the Cavalier, though haughty in his superiority, is allowed no point of advantage upon the impact or melee. If the fire disrupt the Cavalier as he advances, or loss rend gaps in his thin line of horsemen, the fight may be prejudiced in favor of God and Parliament - it is certain that the Cavalier does in his rash arrogance extend his line so far that it can not hold against a good winnowing.

Ok as cheap support, but would you want to rely onthem in hand to hand ? Methinks even the mange ridden poodle would beat them.

My experiences suggest that the mounted arm tend to be aside show in these rules at a later date. The pbi will win or lose it for you.

In our last engagement against the Poodle lovers, a brave unit of Carbine Horse helped rout a unit of Cavaliers via a flank attack then on following up routed 2 foot regiments in turn by further flank attacks. We were all in shock but it did win the game for Fairfax. It helped that the Cavaliers and foot were pinned in place but the Carbine equiped horse can be a useful addition to Determined horse.

Bah!! pure nonsense this advice these so called experts are giving out. It is so very obvious the two best tactics are to either move up within 5 MU then turn about so your back is facing said Cavaliers, or stand and take their charge like real men. After all its only a helpless little furry poodle that you seem so concerned about, don't worry the Cavaliers will make sure their swords are a little blunt on impact.

Now that is truly sound advice that Blathergut should not ignore.

Actually, the armoured carbine horse proved to be quite nice, as far as average troops go. They did get some rounds off and when they had commanded shot with them, were even at impact and up on unarmoured Royalist cavaliers when melee came around!!

The only tweak I may do for next time is to up the poor BGs to average (there were a few 'reroll those sixes'!!!).

I had to remind him to re-roll them too, at least the poodle was keeping an eye on who was what quality in that game

the carbine-armed horse with commanded shot beside them is actually quite good. It forces the opposing horse to charge in (to avoid taking more shots) and if they are with commanded shot themselves, it will have to test to charge.
