2 games so far... both have been really good fun, and while its still early, both did have penty of period feel to them... atm these are my rules of choice! high praise indeed!

used late parliament againts montrose scots in the first game.... plenty of rough down by scots player.....the average parly line covered most of table and the scots gathered their strength on the right flank while fightinh a delaying action in the centre and left.

fortunatley for parliament, the scots attack, of mostly highlanders just didnt quite break through the pike and shot units.. mainly due to a desperate charge into some rough going by determined horse led by general. in the meantime, the centre and left outgunned the poor foot and rolled the scots army up........

Second game, Same Late parliament this time against Imperial Spanish complete with cuirassiers and 5 tercios......

The determined horse pushed ahead and broke through a cuirassier unit, but another cuirassier unit broke 2 units of horse in reply...... the gendarmes on the left flank found themselves being used for target practice by horse units to front and flank, finally goaded into attacked with 50% casaulties there charge was interecepted and they were hit in the flank and routed....

in the centre, three tercios pushed into the parly foot, breaing two untis for none in reply... ut with both flanks fallping and horse moving in time was called with a honourable draw....... next time it iwll be different!

I keep the thought of being able to morph my ECW to Germans and seeing how those Tercio's would fare, not to mention actually getting some Cuirassier on the table. Perhaps next year I will have enough figs in neutral greys and blues to morph them into a nice German army and give them a run myself. Tercio's sound nasty and tough. In the meantime the poodle and I have to work up some other nasty anti NMA surprises for Blathergut.

I found it best to either gang up on an opposing tercio with fire or converging attacks, or avoid it. Pinning it down with a restricted area can be done but is high risk for the BG trying it. Sacrificing a BG to draw it off its path can be done to buy a critical couple of turns of time, but once pursuit is over it can then face in its choice of direction and continue on its way.

thanks gents....

we are learning the rules as we go, but tbh, Im not particularly worried about the tercios.... once they get in they are just the same as the ecw foot units... evens at impact and melee......... unless we are doing it wrong of course!

will try to take some photos of the next games... and maybe a little more detail on the bat rep!

cheers

Where tercios seem to gain is you can't cause cohesion tests from shooting on the beasts! (Atleast, not easily or from a distance.)

They can still lose close combats - being able to fight in all directions is the most distinctive advantage, meaning a single tercio can hold the end of a line in the open against horse or other outflankers, allowing one's own horse to mass on the other. Shooting in all directions is rather annoying for the opposition.

I may be remembering it wrong but don't Early Tercios self support?

I think early tercios do, but not the later ones, need more than 12 bases I think.

Artillery, especially massed battery.... 6 medium guns, takes a tercio down were finding.... in fact , a massed battery seems to be tremendously effective generally!

Late tercios (and kiels) count as self-supported if they have no enemy threatening their rear.(pg 174)
6 guns! That's alot of points and not even available to many armies. If the enemy takes that battery the game would be about over......
