First game impressions

Had my first game of FogR last night.

The game played well and lots of reading paid off.

We played with ECW starter armies and found that there are some behaviours that differ somewhat from AM.

I was at a disadvatage at one point with 1 BG of 6 pike/shot facing 2 BGs of 6 pike/shot.

In FogAM I would have stood around exchanging shots and delaying the inevitable.

I did this for a while but when he finally charged in a realised that in FogR the strategies are reversed. Shooting he had 8 shooting dice to my 4.

It would have been better to charge in myself and have 6 dice vs six dice at impact and then 6 dice vs 8 dice in mellee - sucking up both BGs in the process.

Thinking about it now maybe it woudlhave been better to form square but am not sure if that woudl have helped me suffer less shooting hits/casualties.

We've found (in our copious 3 games so far  ) that you can't sit around and wait, especially when outnumbered like that. The shooting will do you in very quickly.

Yup, shooting can be fatal in Fog(R). Wait till you try the earlier lists, and really have to get your brain out of (am) mode.

Of course in the earlier lists they will likely end up with mostly Arquebus, so it will be like shooting javelins at each other, so will take a bit of marching to get to the shooting stage. Yes if your outnumbered by shooters its a lot better to close in and melee them and hope for the best. Forming square would not have helped you in that situation, its mostly a gee I am stuck out here all alone and the enemy cav is threatening to charge me......... from more than one direction. Removes the flank so no flank charge but you use only 1/4 of your dice so likely will only get one die per side of the square in combat. Still its better to have a chance then start down a cohesion level after they hit you.
