Reinstalling FoG (RoR) on Windows 7 PC

I've just bought a new PC which runs Windows 7 and I've tried to install FoG from my original download files and I'm struggling to get it to work.

I installed ROR 1.1.0 successfully, but when I try to install FOG fullpatch1.2.8 it doesn't recognise the serial number. I then tried FOG 1.01 and same message.

I try to run FoG and there is no program in the Slitherine/FOG folder.

I then try reinstalling ROR again and the Win 7 Program Compatability Assistant tells me the installation doesn't have the right settings and that I should re-run with the correct settings.

Any help is gratefully received. :?

Please don't tell me that I have to buy a new version of FoG for Windows 7 :(

Instead of using 1.2.8 get the 1.3.3 full installer. 1.2.8 had different versions for Slitherine & matrix and maybe you had the wrong one. 1.3.3 is shared so this is probably the best fix.

OK. Just for the record I tried the 1.2.8 full patch because that's what was suggested in a previous post (viewtopic.php?t=17405)- and it's one I had already downloaded (and used successfully) for my XP machine.

Could you clarify a couple of points for me:

* Where do I get the 1.3.3 full installer?

* Do I need to install anything before 1.33?

* Will my serial number from RoR work with it? My RoR serial number was only successful with the ROR installation file and not with any FoG files.

Thanks for all your help.

EDIT

I've been to the downloads section of the forum and it says that 1.3.3 is gained by running 1.2.8 full download and using the in game updater. I've re-downloaded the 1.2.8 downloader and tried to run it, but it doesn't recognise my ROR serial number.

Please help

Well thanks to Gudin's posts about trying to reinstall on a new computer... and Iain's reply I've made some progress.

The key thing is that there is a different serial number for ROR and FoG. I didn't have the serial number in my mail for FoG, but Iain's reference to a "My Account" page helped me track it down (thanks Google!) - it would be great to have a button at the top of this screen!

Anyway, having run FoG full installer v1.28 with the correct serial number it successfully installed the game.

However....

When I run the game I get the following error...

Is the game compatible with Windows 7 64 bit OS?

Thanks, I'm sorry too!

The good news is that I still have my XP machine to play on... but I want to re-image it so I'd like to get my nice shiny new PC in FoG action ASAP! :D

It is compatible with win 7 64 bit as that is what i am runnning it on.

The link to the 1.3.3 full patch should be: http://www.slitherine.com/files/fog/fie ... _1.3.3.exe

Try that instead.

I'm also running it on Windows 7 64 bits, so there shouldn't be any problem.

OK latest installment....

I've just downloaded the full 1.33 installer and run it. I start FoG and I get the same error message as the one posted earlier, the only difference is that is says Filed of Glory (version 1.3.3) in the top left of the error window.

Can someone please suggest something?

Does it have to be installed to a particular directory? The installer doesn't suggest a path, so I'm just creating a directory within my User folder.

Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks, Morbio.

I don't remember the exact steps I've followed, but it wouldn't matter anyway, as the new installer should be different.

What you should do on Windows 7 for gaming in general is:
- right click the installer, and any other installing executable you're using and pick "Run as administrator" (to grant the programs full rights at install)
- do not install on C drive, but on another one (D,E, whatever suits you the best)
- install latest DirectX from MS
- install the latest videocard drivers
- install the .Net and Visual C++ 2005/2008/2010 Runtimes/Redistributables
- install OpenAl

It seems cothyso understands but when I have downloaded a patch it has been very straightforward, I just go with the instructions and let ir "Run". All of the files, updates etc would autoamtically be placed in folders that the game has inc on your machine.

If you ar have problems. Copy the error message, contact tech support in particular keithmartinsmith (his user name), paste it on the new post to keith and wait for a reply. Alos include any details of how, when, why it occurred. Sometimes I have found when updating or downloading patches etc. Problems occur when something else is updating at the same time. Just reboot machine and try again. Normally always the best advice I have been given is to reboot (restart) even shut down and start again.

We need to get a link to MyPage added to other areas of the site to make it easier to access.

We'll have a big update coming soon so we'll build an external patch for that which will hopefully make life easier for everyone.

The problem with trying to get so many updates out to you guys are there are various technical glitches with the various set ups that cause us all sorts of head aches!

To be honest, I can't see how I can go wrong. All I do is download the installing exe, run it (supplying serial number) and that's it. The only bit where I have any decision to make is when it asks for a directory.

My account is administrator, so I can't see whatI'd gain by right clicking and running as administrator.

My PC is brand new and has all the latest windows updates, all the latest drivers, everything. I checked this when I got it.

In terms of posting the error message, then it is the same as the one I posted earlier. No error messages, it just says my "...installation is corrupted".

Having run the FoG installer do I need to run RoR now? I think I ran RoR (v1.01) a couple of days before the 1.2.8 and 1.3.3 versions of the FoG installer. Is this a problem?

even if your account has administrator rights, they are not granted to a program you are launching, part of Windows 7 anti wrong doing auto-protection system. so..

There is a weird Windows 7 bug we are looking at to do with elevated privileges. It is actually in another game but it could effect any game. If we can work it out we'll fit it in to FoG, but its a bit tricky.

OK, I've just re-run FoG 1.3.3 as administrator and I have the same error.

Is there anything you can do to help me? Are there any log files I can show? Are there any trace utilities or anything?

Should I have installed in the Program Files directory, or is a sub folder of Users OK?

Should I uninstall and start from scratch? If yes, is there an Uninstall routine?

I really would like to run FoG on my new PC.

I would suggest uninstalling and installing from scratch to the defaulted folders. There should be an uninstall option under the Control Panel, in Programs I think (not in front of a W7 machine).

It shouldn't be possible to run the installer without being an administrator, but you might want to force it to do so every time you run an installer when attempting the reinstall.

Cheers

I can sympathise with your frustration Morbio - after my PC crashed, & despite have backed everything up on my external drive, it's taken me ages to get to a working copy again and I still cannot get IF working. Looks like I'm going to have to buy it again as the option to download again has expired.

Mail me your order details and we'll see if we can sort it out. You shouldn't have to buy another copy!

OK, I've tried uninstalling and I get this screen, No FoG to uninstall.

Image

I try to reinstall from scratch and get this message:

Image

So clearly FoG is installed.

I carry on and get this screen:

Image

As you can see there is no default folder suggested. If I don't suggest one then I get an error saying "The specific path is not valid".

So, to summarise: FoG doesn't provide a default path (hence the reason I created a FoG folder in my user directory), it doesn't run successfully (it thinks the installation is corrupt) and there is no unistall routine and it doesn't show in the uninstall options in Control panel.

All further help is gratefully received.
