commanded shot support

I was wondering if you had cavalier, commanded shot and cavalier lined up like that would both cavaliers get protected by the commanded shot or is it a one stand protects one stand.
By the looks of the rules you can protect more than one adjacent mounted unit as long as the commanded shot is not ahead of either mounted unit.

To your question, my memory is that protection is per file (not unit) on either side of them. Elements can protect to either side simultaneously. I'd have to check the rules to be certain but that's what I remember.
So where x and X are cavalier bases (of 2 units) and S is a commanded shot element (which would have a second rank but I did not show it), only the X stands are protected:

I will have to check if it units for commanded shot support or files though...

Mellis is correct. Page 126 2nd last paragraph does talk about protection and 'other friendly battle groups'. Protection is all and only about files. Nothing else. Your example is correct.
