Mortar Systems

There really shouldnt be a reason why mortar systems cant move on their own.

Breakdown/Setup (should take 1 turn each) with limited moved (3 or 4 tiles) since the tubes are heavy *but not impossible to move dismounted with troops.

But they certainly shouldnt require a truck to move. Soldiers are/were trained to carry these systems. They didnt rely on mounted movement. We're not talking about big equipment either. Standard 81", 82" and 3" mortar systems.

There's no reason why they cant move dismounted.

I know some people agree, and have created missions where the mortar troops are self-mobile.

A 3 person crew could carry the mortar, base plate, firing site (be it 60mm or 81mm), but how much ammo are they going to pack out? You need a vehicle to move it and its ammo.

Yeah. Edit the Squads.csv file and change mortar teams to 'infantry' instead of 'artillery'. Just no movement animations

Other ideas would be to code in a "minimum range" and allow the mortar team to use their rifles within that range.
Right now, the mortar won't "assault" if it was adjacent to target. It would simply bombard you at tile range 1.

It would be interesting to code in the 60mm or 81mm as equipment that can be abandoned and captured... well, for just a few shots before exhausting the ammo.
