Objects vs Units

Objects have normal and destroyed, visible within LOS, can be occupied, occupants can fire out and be destroyed by incoming fire. I assume that the object provides some protection?
Can the direction of incoming and outgoing be restricted to one side?
Units have normal and destroyed, invisible if hiding or high ground, can be mounted and dismounted, auto ejects occupants when destroyed. I assume that occupants cannot fire out or be fired upon?
Can you make them immobile so that they won't retreat?

You can make objects immobile (e.g. AT guns or mortars).
Occupants of units cannot fire out or be hit.

Pip, in Data\Objects is Bulge, Desert and Test. Test has the French objects. How does the editor know that this is the French items?
Can I make a new objects folder for my campaign?

Answer, yes
Create the objects folder in your main campaign folder, not in data. Inside create the folder for your objects. Place the objects dds and s4f inside.
Edit the text1 and add IDS_O_stuff, "stuff",
Find the entry for desert and follow that format
Main\objects\stuff, stuff will show in the editor.

Why do some objects remain hidden, emplacements, but not others, buildings?

So I'm looking at the STUB again. I looked at it last night. I now see where objects folder goes. Again. Woulda saved me time tonight. Duh.
I also see the object text where you can make something hidden until detected.

J2J,
Look at page 18 in the STUB Engine docs .... the object needs to be tagged HIDES.
HIDES --- object is not shown until tile is revealed
EDIT : You figured it out ... my posting just as you posted.

How do you make an object give more protection?

The cover values in the terrain file affect the cover rating of a tile. And you can tell the object which terrain it should stamp onto a tile it sits on.
