I am just seeking claarification that I have got this right.
A colunela in formation:
Aq Pk
Aq Pk
-- Pk
-- Sw
Charges in and ...
Situation 1 takes no losses at impact, therefore the Swordsmen are not allowed to move to overlap regardless.
Situation 2 a pike base is lost and the pike are neither fighting HW nor non frag Sp, so the Swordsmen move to overlap.

Correct.
Of course, you could deploy the BG
Aq Pk
Aq Pk
Sw Pk
Then you would not get the +POA for 4 rank deep Pk/Sw, but you could expand the Sw.
We could have written a special exception for Colunelas, but we were trying to keep the rules as simple as possible - and as they were an experimental foramtion that did not stand the test of time, we felt that we did not need to be too kind to them.

Am I correct in thinking this is also legal:
Aq Pk Aq
----Pk
----Pk
----Sw
The rule on p. 33, 3rd bullet says
Other battle groups must have their shot bases as equally divided as possible between two single files, one on either side of the pike rectangle. Exception--if the battle group includes no more than 2 shot bases can be deployed in one single file on either side of the pike rectangle. ("can")
This is more about my sense of symmetry than any tactical consideration, per se...

Yes, if rather ineffective.
