I'm no expert but I'm not sure why you'd think Englishmen were more brightly dressed than Germans. The brightness of the clothing of either would probably depend on the stage they were at in the supply cycle.

Moreover, the brightness or otherwise of the illustrations says nothing at all about the brightness of the actual cloth (when new).
OTOH the ubiquity of buff coats does tone down the overall brightness.

My quick answers
Yes wrong word I used.
I ment lack of uniform colours unlike ECW uniforms.
My research into both the early and later German Protestant armies in both english and german of the 30 Years War has shown a lack of anything that could be called a uniforms simular to what may have been used in the ECW.
My mistake people.

I had figured lots of med blues, black, grey, green and brown myself. Surprised to see the red, that I had not expected but there is your bright colour.
My buff coats tend to be a more on the yellowish side, I just am not happy with the real almost white colour they show in the Osprey books, perhaps I have not managed to choose the proper colours to mix it.
Blathergut would like to do continental 30 YW, so my next thought is to look at Protestent Germans once we get the army lists. Might have to be a bit more uniformed just so I can keep track of who is with who on the TT. I think that is where the need of the gamer for easy organizing might have to step away from historical reality.

I must admit never used any red just a lot of dull colours.
There isn't a problum with whos with who not ofton that your own troops get close enough to get mixed up except for the Cavalry.
TBH the best thing about the 30 years war is the majority of armies were mercenery and to change the army all you do is change the flags and for the protestant side theres not many pictures or infomation about flags.

Yes indeed, drop a new flag make a new army. That really is an upside alright. Now the only problem is my boys pikes all have spear heads, not so easy to slip flags off of them so likely will have to make new command stands with German flags to slip into the existing pike blocks.
Now if only I can find some goose stepping pike figures.......
