Download vs Boxed version

Hi,
Ready to buy both BBCBA and FoG, but am unfamiliar with the limitations, if any, with the download vs the boxed hard copy. You may well have answered this previously but I didn't see it.
If I have the CD, I'm assuming it serves as my backup copy in case my hard disk crashes, or i want to move the game to a different computer of mine (may be getting new laptop for Christmas).
If I have the download:
1. How do you handle failed downloads? If it repeatedly fails to successfully download, can it be converted to a HC version for the difference in cost?
2. Can the download be backed up to a thumb drive or DVD and subsequently used as described above for the hardcopy disk?
I'd love to get the better price but want to make sure I'm not limiting my options by doing so.
Thanks in advance!
JJ
