Oversize bases and turning

I just got some Essex Babylonian chariots. 40mm wide is okay but they won't fit within a 40mm depth. I'll need 50mm (crammed in) or 60mm for better visual effect. Does this affect rules such as turns so that a chariot line (all in 1 rank) would turn to form 2 wide X 2 deep or do they form up after the turn "as if" in standard 40mm depth (i.e., 1 wide by 4 deep)?
It's probably in the rules somewhere, which I don't have at hand at the moment.

Turn as if they were based correctly. The option exists to put things on deeper bases. If this made a difference to how they turned pike would be put on 10mm deep bases and other HF placed on 20mm deep by nasty players.

There are nasty FoG players?
I assume the same philosophy applies to other rules. Examples:
1) Fighting the chariots from the front and flank (i.e., only one flank base in direct contact)
2) Ranges for firing.
Seems like it would be worthwhile to mark the edge of the base at the 40mm depth for easy reference.

Fighting to flank would not be a problem as we know what happens. However bow ranges, double move up to 6MU, contacting rear is the confusing part that you will have to talk to your opponent about before hand. Rather than wait 'til it comes up.
I'd be rather miffed if I double moved to within 6MU of the rear then found I couldn't shoot/contact as it was really another 10mm away.

I'd be miffed if you had doubled moved to within 6MU as you can't do that

Your pedantry doesn't help Nik.

It's not pedantry. You can't double move then shoot (without moving closer first) as you have to stop outside of 6MU. Similarly, if heavy foot double move, they can't contact the enemy BG in two moves.

It was used as an example of what may happen if the use of non-regulation depth bases was not clarified before the start of the game.
OK
I would feel miffed if I double moved to just a nanometer outside 6MU and then found that I was an extra 10mm away during the next move.

What difference would that make?

I suppose it comes down to where is the actual end of the base and where does 6MU actually occur. Nothing like measuring up to the base make a move perhaps with MU's to spare and then find out oh yes I could have gotten 10mm closer since your base is too big.
Perhaps Phil should try clothing his pachyderm and then his mind would not be so disturbed by F***** pedants
Just a thought from the fully clothed part of the forums.

Or arguing about if you are in or out of bow range.

Your time will come. I'm going the way of the French parliament. Less clothes for everyone.

Hmmmm....maybe if the chariots carry the horses they can fit on a regulation size base and all will be well.
F****** manufacturers.

Aha!! at last we get to the root of the problem. Better tell those sculptors to watch the size of their figs in future.

This is not what I have been led to believe.
If you use bases that are a different size to normal then you operate with them as that size.
So changing the base depth does affect turning 90 degrees.
And distances are measured to the actual base not it's imaginary size.
If you try to use the bases imaginary size you'll end up in all sorts of problems.

but this would give an advantage to chariots (and others) with over deep bases. They turn 90 and must be 2 wide if previously only 1 deep. Free expansion. Think I'll base my elephants on 42mm deep bases.

You certainly will. In fact if you had a square base with imaginary sides it would have a negative area, and nobody wants that. Having said that, in Hordes of the Things, an imaginary beast such as a Boojum or Snark should logically be based on a 25.8i mm square base

As my understanding of the rules goes, that would be correct.
I think it is only everyones honesty and fear of being labelled cheesy that has stopped it until now.

Why not use a 10mm mini for the chariot? Sure, it will be a bit awkward to see it right next to the bigger 15mm foot, but it will easily fit onto a regular chariot base without any problem. Not to mention that some of the 10mm minis out there have excellent sculpting jobs.

An excellent idea, but, alas too late as I've already purchased 30 GBP of chariots.
