Is it possible to get the updater to either (a) recognise a proxy server or (b) recognise the Windows settings with regards to proxy servers?

Updating through SOCKS or HTTP proxies is not currently supported. The game currently would need you to have a transparent proxy. Multiplayer doesn't work through these proxies either.

Do you know which kind of proxy server you have, SOCKS or HTTP? If it is SOCKS, then you might be able to use a third-party application to make updating and multiplayer work through your proxy.

http squid type proxy unfortunately. Not a huge deal.
