I read in the instructions that, if I lose my camp, I am to drop some hit points. But, when my
camp is taken - it is never protected - I see no evil effect. What is going on?

I can guarantee, if you lose your came, you'll lose points. Look in the victory screen. There's a box for camp points and you'll see them there.

I have won a few games by taking a camp that belonged to a large army. In some armies your better off to take the fortified camp for that very reason
