to get me going in this I thoumght that I might go back to my childhood and get some armies in 1/72 plastic and not bother painting themm. Then I can play without having that 1 to 5 year wait to get 2 armies ready.
So, what 1/72 or thereabouts plastics are available and where, and are they as cheap as chips......thanks
Will

Some quite nice ones, it would appear. Perhaps something of a shortage of cavalry.

base them, spray them brown, varnish them with armypainter quickshade and they are pretty much done anyway!
If you were fussy you could do the flesh and metal bits first...

Revell Germany made some nice sets years ago, infantry (two types with hats and helmets) artillery and a box of cavalry. They used to run me about $11.00 a box way back when I got them. I think someone has picked up the molds and re popped them. Thought I saw them in a store recently under a different manufacturer. We used them to make DBR Spanish and Dutch armies. I have seen some Landsknechts in plastic back in the spring, not sure who made them I think they were out of Russia. I probably have loose sprues kicking about still but not sure where they would be.

Thanks for the replies. I can see some quite nice ones about, particularly Zvezda. The problem is that getting hold of them isn't cheap as cheap chips and the chance of getting everything I would need to finish an army seems improbable. So have decided to stick with and increase the Warlord 28mm that I started, and use them like my son and his friends use their Warhammer. ie unpainted and then gradualy paint them up........ooooohhh the heresy......

The battalia box from Warlord is a great way to boost your numbers and save some money. I have done up 3 pike and shot, 2 commanded shot and a unit of firelocks, now its time to start looking at the horses. Most of that came out of the battalia box and I opened 1 box of infantry. Takes a bit to get a system down for assembling them but they do look nice when all painted up.

I can see that there is some stuff out there but getting hold of it is pricey and difficult, so have sacked that idea. I already have some Warlord stuff so am going back to that. and I will base them and use them unpainted and then paint them up as and when. It's a lesson from my son, his mates and their 40k . Takes the pressure off.

Expensive? Where in the world are you looking at for the miniatures they are really cheap. I use nothing but 1/72 for my games (ancients so far).
This is where I go for my purchases and they have sales on a regular basis for up to 20% off:
