When are you in the OPEN

I know this has been discussed but I cannot recall the answer.
Cav hit a corner of a med foot base carlessly left out of a terrain feature.
The Cav are completely in the Open.
The Med foot is 95% in the terrain.
Do the Cav receive a POA for Mounted vs Med Foot in the Open
If they lose do the Med foot have a -1 for lossing to mounted in the open.
On a related note. Is it possible to manufacture a circumstance whereby in a combat a Mounted Unit is in the open while a Med Foot unit is simultaneously not in the open.

The Cav are not in the open so yes. (depends on exact wording though). Looking at the QRS the Only in open terrain is from the perspective of the mounted. Would need to see the wording on page 135 to be certain - I am basing this on the QRS.

Again Yes according to the QRS.
The actual wording in the QRS is:
"MF testing for losing close combat vs Mtd or HF in open"
IMH this means the HF or Mtd must be in the open for this to apply
If the wording was:
"MF in the open testing for losing close combat vs Mtd or HF"
then the MF would need to be in the open to get the cohesion penalty
Lesson:
- if you want to avoid impact and cohesion penalties keep the entire base in the terrain so that enamy must also enter the terrain to make contact.
NB: if its only one base that this applies to or jsut a corner the conform may sick the MTD into the terrain for combat after the initial impact.

Yes. a base straddling terrain is considered in terrain that slow cavalry most (I think its cav). so if the MF is part in and part out of the terrain they are in the rough while the cav are not.

IIRC the Glossary says something like If the base claiming the POA or causing the Cohesion Test
modifier even partly enters uneven, rough or difficult terrain..
So the operative part is the base claiming.

Based on what Gino stated and as Dan clarified, in impact the cavalry would be in the open and receive the POA. This was asked and answered somewhere here on the forum and maybe in the FAQ. The MF would not, however, suffer the cohesion test penalty for losing to mounted in the open as they are in terrain.

Oh yes they would they lost to mounted in the open. They were not MF in terrain losing to mounted.

Phil is correct. Here is the thread I misquoted:
