Is there in one place a description of the bonus units. For example, what does the drill sgt do?

Hmmm - good point. Not really - and the tooltip doesn't explain it.

Drill Sgt - updates the targeted unit to silver Elite
Revive/Medic - restore a depleted infantry squad to full strength

Selecting the benefit, right clicking on the unit, and then left clicking on the icon seems to do the trick to use these benefits, though that you are right clicking to add the bonus to the left click options in a 2-step process rather than directly apply the benefit was not obvious.
