Normandy causeway odd behaviour ... enemy units reappearing?

I'm just completing my first run through of the Normandy causeway scenario. I'd managed to move across both causeways without heavy loss by judicious use of suppression and then assault with infantry on the various German positions (fix, fire, flank, finish). After moving across the right hand causeway (as seen for the beachead) I'd encountered and eliminated a German MG unit in the sandbags.
After assuring myself they were indeed destroyed I moved two Shermans up the road just past the buildings across the road from the sandbags and was in the process of moving infantry up along side when a German 88mm gun and crew appeared on the German turn after I'd passed the position and blasted my two Shermans to pieces. So my question is ...
How'd that happen? Has it happened to anyone else? A position cleared of one unit then another unit (especially a heavy towed artillery piece) remarkably appears in that position?
Just curious.
P.S. As a designer and geographer I'm creating maps for other folk's scenarios if you need based on historical action of the Canadian forces in Normandy through September of 44. First two are the fight for Petut-en-Besson (June 8th) and Bretteville-sur-Laize (during August's Operation Totalize). I can make maps for others too.
