Has anyone tried these? I'm looking for a use for my dark age mounted trash. Not sure this is workable but it looks like it might be interesting. I was thinking of taking some franks to bulk up the infantry some but am also wondering about just lancers and light foot.

thoughts?

It may have been the British Open that was won last year by a player with Ostrogoths. I think that player took the army as all lancers and bow-armed light foot. Responding to a challenge, this player also won with a fortified camp placed as far forward as possible, and a flank march in every game.

The player used the assets creatively and with decision, to good effect.

The army clearly can win - but I think it is not for the cautious or faint of heart.

Sounds like it would make for a fun competition. Flank march in every game? What a concept!

By the third game everyone knew it was going to happen. And still didn't believe it would. Got me 2 camps, and certainly swung the game in my direction in at least 2 of the games. I didn't do it in the last game as the guy I had the bet with let me off. Still 5 games out of six and the last game was for the title.

Ah! So you are the one. Congratulations - however late, they are still deserved. Those wins with a scorned and maligned army, and the use of the fortified camp as a provocation and base are most impressive. This coup got a lot of discussion and thought amongst several of us over here.

I imagine that had to be freeing in a way: knowing this was your plan and just going with it throughout. When you started to realize you might win the comp did it change your attitude some?

Not really, in the second last game 2 BG of lancers ambushed out of a wood. But it was good sticking with the plan. Meant I didn't have to think early on. I'd started to sober up by the time the up close jiggery pokery started.

I noticed the beer on the table in Tim's AAR photos. All Germanic armies should run on the proper fuel mixture.

I think I'm getting the plan down. Get up in the morning and have a few cocktails for breakfast, drive over to the tourney, flank march and ambush from the woods with the mounted in every game, pick up trophy, and drive home? That sounds like a plan I could copy....

Well, coctails would be considered a bit 'girly' for Phil, unless said cocktails are TVRs.

I am not so sure on the driving part either but the rest is about right

I feel insulted. I said start to sober up. I never said I made it as far as sober.

To be honest I like a beer the nights of competitions, I don't have the long haired generalissimo there to nag me, so I tend to enjoy the evenings. And have the occassional hair of the dog the next day.
