I realize IF just came out but SaS is now on the preorder page for October
Quite excited about that expansion, will complement SOA nicely as , although the 2 packs arent 100% contemporary (11th to 13th centuries vs 13th thru 15th) , they are closer to having "historical" lineups expansion pack vs pack than the others.... Plus sand terrain!

Any TT'toppers know if knights will be consider armoured or heavy armoured? (just curious)

Well I"ll have at least one opponent whose excited about SaS!

Aftter being on these forums a while it does appears many players are more "into" ancient lists then the medieval, but SaS has a pretty wide variety of armies
Hopefully someday the game system will expand into Fog Ren (likly would be a new engine) Would love to have Hussars and Jannisaires duke it out!

I am also looking forward to SAS, religious orders versus masses of Muslims... epic battles here we come :D

Ancient, medieval, renaissance...who cares. I'll buy them all! ..and Napoleonic wars

Hakkaa päälle!
Finnish war cry of light cavalryman(hakkapeliitta) in the service of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden during the Thirty Years' War, commonly translated as "Cut them down!"

Thats the spirit!

I have to admit , the only era/genre of warfare i have little interest in are Ancient Americas (ie mayans etc al)

I thought hakkapeletta meant " just because we are riding reindeers doesnt mean you can sit in our laps and tell us what you want for X-mass"

Or how about the Seven Years War? The Saxon war cry then was, "Macht des den nieder" which I believe meant make them as nothing litteraly or "Strike them all down." Gotta love that period.

Sounds like a challenge to me. I wonder if we will be able to pit ancients against renaisance when they do FOG R

Yes, I can see that; little musket balls bouncing off a line of shields.

You medievals should feel free to set up a game and PM me a password; I'd be happy to stomp some tin-can men.

At Crecy in 1346 the horses were not armoured. At Poitiers 1356 the French had dismounted many of their men-at-arms and armoured the horses of mounted men-at-arms so they could withstand archery better. Horses still lacked backside armour. I guess armouring the horse is not currently taken into account.

We had to fit all the different armour levels into 4 classes, to keep things simple. So each armour class includes a fair variety of armour level. 1150 is when the men became fully armoured.

However, you should not get too hung up on specific armour definitions, because the lists are written to get the right effect between historical opponents. Sometimes we fudge the armour classification a bit to achieve this. Late medieval troops generally get rated a bit lower than troops with the same armour would be in earlier periods - but the differentials are maintained between different late medieval troop-types.

The army lists are an integral part of the FOG rules system and the design imperative is to get realistic interactions between contemporary troops and not worry about whether anachronistic "what-ifs" are "realistic". (Because they are only fantasy anyway).

The English archers at Poitiers still managed to defeat the French knights (by shooting at the unprotected flanks of the horses). It is the end result that ultimately matters, and that is what we are simulating. I cannot think of any examples of full horse armour allowing mounted knights to defeat longbowmen behind stakes.

Thats a great explanation of the game system, especially in regards to the relative value within the expansions of differing armour values. I assumed that was the case, likly thru osmosis from other forum posts and or poking around the TT forums.
4 armour levels seems sufficient, although a fifth might be nice to represent real late armour ie Gothic plate on fully barded horses

Obviously not going to happen and likly really not needed, just one of those whimsical wishlist type things...

Not sure its up yet, I imagine Slitherine has its hands full with the release of FOG R for the TT. Perhaps in a month or two you will see the pre-order for SaS.
Usually they send an e-mail when a pre-order is up or you can check the news link up top to see if its available yet.
