I saw that in the DAG some time near the name of unit appears upper case letters (S or NP) ; what do these mean? I saw that passing over S the unit switch to footer form (if cavalry) but only for the time I'm over it, NO lcue about the NP. In the help I didn't found any clue.

S = alternate troop form (so knights dismount to HF)
PD = portable defenses (stakes for longbows)(click on the PD to activate/buy them
M = mixed BG

but how do you get knights to deploy dismounted?

Right click on them in deployment mode and an option for "alternate troop type" pops up... You can change them back if you want as well (atleast until you exit deploy mode)

Keep in mind not all knights can dismount (only the ones noted as "s" in the purchase screen)

Ya, like deploying stakes, right-click on BG and a little "alternate troop" thingie pops up. Click it and you dismount. Do it again and you are mounted knights. But only during deployment phase.

Ah, so you don't buy them dismounted, you just buy the knights and then choose to dismount them in during deployment? makes sense, although I would think there would be fairly limited circumstances under which you'd want to dismount them? (obviously I don't play SoA much).

Well they are horribly expensive HF!

But:

1. Some average knights become superior foot.
2. Sometimes, if you know you are facing endless pikes or such, dismounting might seem better.

Yes, you just buy the knight and choose at deployment which way you want them.

Some lists offer the option to buy dismounted only and at a lower cost. I alway choose them, because most armies you'll face make dismounting imperitive anyway.

I tend to dislike dismounting my knights (although if you have a list where they are already dismounted and thus cheaper they are good) Mostly as there is such a suplus of heavy weapons in most armies, the heavy armour the dismounts get is wasted, and their heavy weapons dont stack well vs pikes...

BTW, do dismounted knights get the bonus for casualties having to below 50% before they start losing dice, or do only the mounted boys get that benefit? (my guess is only the mounted)

Never thought about that! My gues is that they are the same for consistancy's sake. In my many battles as Burgundians vs. the Swiss, I ended up dismounting everything because charging pikes with knights is suicide.

I believe dismounted knights are just treated as other HF are, e.g. the 50% loss rule to lose a melee attack only applies when they are mounted, since dismounted knights are classed as HF not as knights.

I would tend to agree but..... the thing is they are knights in the purchase screen and I believe the game engine uses different files for DAG units vs what you create in the editor.... I dont believe it is possible in the editor to create a knight and then dismount it (really wouldnt be a reason to either in a fixed battle)
Basically there is no way to test ......
