Fog of War visibility

Lots of pictures I see have the visibility distance of units shown in a lighter colour.

I have never had this in any version of the game!

The only thing that I can see is that I don't have the option for darker hex's available - any reason why?

Beginning to bug me with all the AAR's I am reading.

Can you post an image of what you are referring to?

If the game played is the GS version, a color different from black means that the unit in question (usually air units and subs) is due an upgrade for movement.

This is explained in the manual.

As far as the darker FoW should be a setting in the options page.

You do have FoW selected before you started the game right?

I have FOW set, but there is no difference in the Hex shading anywhere on the map, I just can't see things outside of my units visibility, but because there is no shading difference I don't know which hex's I can see in and are empty vs which ones are "empty" because of FOW.

Any of your pictures show this, the shading difference for Hex's out of visibility. I don't get that in my games.

So I have gone back and checked that the non GS version has it working with the graphics card on my PC as opposed to my laptop.

Results are:

1. it doesn't appear to have anything to do with 'darker hexs' option
2. it is definately a GS issue

so the problem is that whilst FOW does work - I can't see any units outside of my visibility, I don;t get a shading effect to show the area of my visibility

given that the settings file had at least one incorrect setting (giving me XXXX's instead of text) maybe this is a settings issue?
