Following a routing unit

Frequently when a unit is routed the unit that routs it follows it. I understand this is what happened the majority of times and there is no complaint there. What I wonder about is when you manage to form a strong defensive line with an advantage from terrain why would a unit follow a victory ans destroy the continuity of the whole defensive position by following that victory and I don't mean the random anarchy charges. I would think that in the more trained armies this would not be a frequent occurance.

I can second this issue/question...as I have often wondered and been frustrated by the same behavior. I can understand less disciplined troops with the blood lust up following the easy kill....but highly trained professional soldiers whose doctrine is that keeping formation = victory? This may be my last major irritation still left in FOG 1.2.8 beta.

Can only agree. Reading ancient sources it's very rare that a Roman unit runs after like that and is noted in the same way as the old and lovely rhetoric of the captain - today the sailor was drunk, who replied with that today the captain was sober...

I have noticed that there seems to be less chasing these days than in the past and I have been playing FOG PC since beta. If your opponent is nice enough to attack your line with a full line then the guys that broke an enemy will stay put and turn to face a conveniently placed enemy who is adjacent. One thing the PC game is missing over the TT game that I believe is going to be corrected is that a pursuit that contacts an enemy is a charge, so pursuing into the backside of a fresh target should count as a rear charge with the auto cohesion loss etc.

Personally I find anarchy to be more painful than the chasing routers

Ahh, but i guess you dont mind it when they chase a routed unit that then plows thru another enemy dropping it a cohesion level and then routs that unit in turn? :D

I think too much emphasis is placed on the supposed iron discipline of the legions.. When men are in a killing frame of mind, I think history shows they keep going ....at least until exhausted or an inspired leader can convince them to stop...

Anyway, historical opinion aside which of course is highly subjective, i think the way it works now is good for gameplay other wise one could simply stand still, opponent bring up unit, if destroyed bring ups next one etc...

Dead: I think you see less chasing now after 1.26 is because they changed the rout routine.... More often than not the router "evaporates" instead of attemting to flee thru their own men.... since the router doesnt move, the routee doesnt either

I still see them run off but see less of my guys doing the chasing, not sure why that is I don't question it just hope for some lucky rolls, that I seem to be short of in my games lately
