Seemed like a good idea at the time. In retrospect, I think there was no point.

The idea was to let the Italian Navy dominate the Black Sea and then land Axis troops with impunity behind Russian lines. In reality, if you do Barbarossa right, you don't need to do the landings. The don't speed anything up.
