Hi There

Looking for written references to the above army anything on the make up Regiments would be good more so the German units raised in the Palatnate area either in German or English,

Cheers

Mansfeld commanded armies for different paymasters over the years and there must have been considerable turnover of troops. He was a rapacious military adventurer and his forces were characterized charitably as a mercenary band and more negatively as an army of brigands, so I would not expect many regiments with pedigrees. In Parker's Thirty Years War collection there was mention of heavy recruiting in 1622 among Swiss and French Protestants before entering Dutch service.

Thanks for that I did read that James I emptied some jails in Scotland to fill the ranks of either Grays Regiment or Seatons Regiment or both. He did have a Swiss regiment given to him by Savoy to fight in Bohimia in 1619-20, I think they became his foot regiment in Germany latter?

I think your right about the best of them being a mercenery band or a bunch of brigands but I still have a feeling for them not that in real life I would actually like them.

It is interesting to note that Mansfeld came from a strict Catholic family yet supposedly led a protestant army against the Emperor.

I think his Cavalry Regiments were a bit better but have'nt been able to find much apart from there names still fun looking.

Hi
The books to get this sort of data on 30 Years War are "Battles of the Thirty Years War" and "The Later Thirty Years War", both by William P Guthrie. published by Greenwood Press. He has detailed order of battle informaiton for most of the major battles as well as deployment maps in most cases.

These books really are a scenerio designers dream come true for the 30 Years War. They can be got via Amazon but unfortunatly they are not cheep.

Best of luck
