Ashigaru

In the FOG book on the Samurai all "Bushi" are HW and BW*.
My question is at what point were the Ashigaru grouped in teppo/yumi/yari? My thought is if you play up to Nagashino you could make Ashigaru MF/Offensive Spear/drilled undrilled?/protected/BW*. My thought is this could represent the teppo unit with supporting yari charging out past the barricades.
I am treating all teppo as BW or BW*. just so I can use my figures in the later period.
Thoughts? And for it is worth I used a Samurai army in a tournament and beat 1 late Republic Roman army, got pasted by a second late Republic army and wiped out a mid Republic Roman in record time.
How did I manage to draw 3 Roman armies I have no idea.
