Field fortifications

Last night I tried to assort some field fortifications and a strange point came up.
Charging arterilly on a hill behind fortifications, really dum of me I know. But I won in the melee, more than that he died ie took a base off.
Now they didn't rout (artillery) so I didn't persue. This was in my melee phase. I oppersite number then charged me with some dismounted knights.
From the rules we decided that as I was not in contact with the base edge I gained nothing, where as the charges received no loss, although he did not count as defending on impact he was uphill. Is this right? I'm just thinking that to charge in would lose any impact effect against a field fortification, and being that the artillery does not rout but dies its very hard to storm FF's.
Comments?
Mike.

Not sure I understand everything you are asking. First, was his artillery group more than 2 stands? If it was just two stands, when he removed a base, the artillery auto-broke. They won't be removed until the end of the JAP, but they do count as broken immediately (and folks nearby have to test, etc.).

Field fortifications have a front and back and you only get the benefit of defending them if you are actually defending them, so you should have gained nothing.

Field fortifications should be hard to storm.

So in effect we did play it right. Putting art' in FF makes sense, as if I were to brake other troops I get to persure over the defences. Shame the crew could not be considered to have routed so I could at least have broken in. Well leson learned Don't attack Art' in FF!
Cheers
