This sort of depends on whether or not you are going with the earlier, half pagan types who are impact foot, or the later, more Christianized proto-Carolingian spearmen and lancers.

My favorite candidates available these days are Khurasan's Late Germans: http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/latergerman.html who look much more like the nascent civilizations following the collapse of Rome, than their vagabond fathers and grandfathers who caused the fall. Also look closely at the Saxons: http://www.splinteredlightminis.com/saxons.html and many of the Britons: http://www.splinteredlightminis.com/saxons.html from Splintered Light. Great stuff there, and highly recommended. Donnington also have a dedicated line here: http://shop.ancient-modern.co.uk/merovi ... s-72-c.asp I have not seen the Donnington infantry, and only a few of the cavalry. I like them very much, but they an older style of sculpting, and less detailed and crisp than the newer lines. Scale is compatible and the armor is in period though and they paint up beautifully, so I do recommend them. These lines alone will easily see you through. For later, fyrd style Merovingian armies I would simply add more stands of Ottonians or Carolingians (without the Romanish morion style of helmets). Old Glory has numerous packs that would serve for either flavor, early or late.

Unless you are madly infatuated with Merovingians as such, I would suggest that you make a large portion of your foot and even the cavalry somewhat generic NW European Dark Ages types though. The sameness of many of the army lists in Wolves From the Sea will allow you ENORMOUS flexibility in this regard, if most of the stands would suffice for Merovingians, Saxons, Visigoths, Vikings or what have you.

Short answer though, I would look first and most closely at Khurasan, Splintered Light and Donnington. 8)

I do it!
