Ladies and/or Gentlemen.

I am a not so fantastic strategy general who is having trouble with 'End of A Dream' scenario. My current army is as follows:

- 5 Heavy Infantry (17-22 level)
- 3 Auxilia (15-20 level)
- 2 Skirmishers (10 & 19 level)
- 2 Hvy Cav (18 & 22 level)
- 1 Lght Cav (20 level)
- 2 Archers (15 & 10 level)

I have to kill him in under 3 minutes and not lose 100 men. I am doing the job lovely except for the 100 men part. My guys are not able to stay alive. They have level 2 weapons and extra javleins etc. Any help or tips would be appreciated. I am on Normal difficulty setting.

Cheers
Blair

Well, your army looks good. What you list as Heavy Infantry, can we assume those are Legionnaires, Principes, etc?

Where are the excess friendly casualties occurring?

I'll tell you what I suspect. I suspect that your 3 cavalry units charge in immediately, then your infantry takes a while to join them, both because they move slower, and because they pause to throw 2 pila?

If that's the case, you might try delaying the committment of your cavalry by just a little, so they're not alone and unsupported for so long.

Granted, this will give you less time to wipe out the enemy, but it may well keep your friendly casualties lower.

Well the Hvy Inf are 3 Legionnaires, 1 Praetorian, 1 Trirari and 1 Spearmen. I don't know much about the principes bizzo.
I have tried delaying the horse to coincide on a flank with the frontal from the Heavies. On the other flank my 3 Auxilia sweep around behind them as well, and then I just chip away at the mountain. My light cav cruise over to the enemy skirmishers in the open and see them off. Do Trirari and Spearmen lack punch maybe.... Spearmen seem to die a bit easier.....

Yes, Spearmen are not very good troops, IMO.

Triarii are somewhat better, but they have very limited training options compared to sword-armed troops.

Triarii

So if Spearmen and Triarii are not the best Hvy Infantry what are? I am going back to an earlier save to rebuild the army and try this scenario again with a different army setup. So I should have Legionnaires and....

The rest of your army is great, just fill the Heavy Infantry slots with Legionaires and/or Principes and/or Praetorians.

The Legionaires are my troops of choice, with a few Praetorians for those really tough jobs.

But overall the balance of your army looks very good.

I would urge you to lavish plenty of love and denarii on your Heavy Cavalry. They will repay your attentions many times over.

(Note that "Big Hit" is Armor Penetration)

The thread above is hard fact. The following one is just my opinion.
