Can some one tell me what the differance is between offensive spear and defensive spear armed troops, adantages and disadvantages of each type in game terms and the difference on how they would be used? Cant find any reference in the online rule book to there difference.

Doesn't the help thing say that offensive spears get bonuses when charging lots of things, whereas defensive spears only get it when charging other defensive spears?

Only different in Impact

In general defensive spearmen will not a get a PoA for their spears if they charge. See the "Impact Combat" section of the help for more specific details. After impact (charge) combat, both offensive spearmen and defensive spearmen are identical. Offensive spearmen are shock troops and liable to anarchy charges. Defensive spearmen are not shock troops and will not anarchy charge.

Defensive spear are just that, a defensive type of troops. They will do well if charged, not so good on offense unless against other defensive spear. Picture a line of troops with their spears set points facing out, in a tight formation with shields overlapping standing there all day, thats defensive spear.

Offensive spear are good on attack or defence. On defence they can close ranks lock shields and plant their spears, but they can also charge into the enemy in a looser formation.

Basically you can attack or defend with offensive spear, defensive spear are better if they stand and wait for the enemy to hit them.
