Tricks, tips, and advice for defeating the French (Agincourt

Hi,
I've become fixated with the battle of Agincourt. When playing the French I sweep the field clear of those pesky English (twice) and we were home in time for Frogs legs and Snails. However, given my grandparents were from Whitehaven in the Lakes District (England) I would like to repeat history and give the CPU French a sound trashing.
I have only played this twice as English and have a few ideas of my own, but advice can never hurt (unless it's to stick ones hand in a blender and turn the blender on).
The first battle I moved forward slightly and then stakes in the ground. The French just moved around the ends of my lines and history looked very different. Second attempt I moved the archers on the wings into the trees on either side with a commander and left Henry with the foot and remaining two units of archers. Things were looking good until the flanks crumbled - it took a bit of doing on the French's part however. This time I'm thinking fight only on one side of the map?
Comments?
Merci Beau coup,
Stefan.

Hi Stefan,
I totally redesigned this scenario with historical numbers, terrain and battleplans for both sides and there are a lot more units on the French side too! It is a million times better than the supplied Agincourt scenario (not biased at all) and it really is a hard fought game for both sides. When you look at it from the French perspective you think 'how can I possibly lose?' that is until you start moving forward and realise how the terrain is going to affect you. When you look at it from the English perspective you think 'how can I possibly win?' that is until you see your first French battlegroup of knights forced back from the English stakes. You can find it Hoc Est Bellum the site created and run by Lupus. There is a direct link to the site in the scenario section of the forum.

Awesome site. Will attempt to regain my English honour this evening.

For what it's worth, stakes should only affect mounted knights not dismounted. I haven't tried them so I'm not sure if they do this correctly or not.

Hi Chris,
I will make notes about the relative damage inflicted/sustained when I "once more unto the breach". They are definitely working against the mtd Kn and the usual outcome is a routed Kn.
As an aside I notice that the AI does not seem to employ the use of the stakes, even when it would seem prudent, I noticed this in my two successful games as the French. Does the AI know how to use stakes? I believe I would have had a far harder time as the French had I needed to overcome the archers behind stakes.
All this aside, and I'll repeat myself, excellent translation of the TT version. I get the same cerebral satisfaction from the computer version of FoG that I get from the TT version. Great thing about this computer version is I can have quick game almost nightly rather than having to wait for the fortnightly club meeting.
Bit tricky to travel from New Zealand to attend the world champs each year, but in time I predict I'll be able to play "online" without needing to break the bank on airline tickets.
Keep up the great work,
Stefan.

Foot knights and other foot troops do indeed seem to walk over stakes as if they aren't there after recently trying this out in a game to see what happened my archers got slaughtered. In this scenario the foot knights are hampered by the disorder from the ploughed fields and the areas of waterlogged (marshy) ground, the mounted knights have all that and the stakes to contend with.

I downloaded the redesigned Agincourt and it seems a complete cake walk for the English now. The French Knights just sort of bugger about doing the Can-Can in front of the English archers making the odd charge here and there, and the Foot just take up position to become pin cushions. I just stood there, didn't move a single unit and demolished the French.
Is there something wrong with the AI? With what I did, if playing a human they would have steam rolled me no problem.
Cheers,
S.

Basically the AI is next to useless. If you play as the French against the AI it will probably up stakes and do something totally stupid and it will be a slaughter of the English. This scenario is best played by 2 human players as in fact ALL the scenarios are, this way you will get a very hard fought battle with victory going to either side.

Cheers. Thought something may have gone wrong with my installation.
Getting 2 others to cough up some cash and purchase FoG - digital for exactly the reason you mention. Human vs Human is where the fun/challenge is at.
Thanks,
S.

Stefan - there is no shortage of humans to play already. Most of us are happy to accept a challenge.
