Pursuit question

when a bg breaks and makes its initial evade, and you pursue and impact the unit, is it like a charge and stands can step forward to hit another BG?
for example
.......bbbbbb
aaaa
.....ccccc
if battle group a broke off and moved an inch and stopped and then BG c pursued and got 5 inches to pursue but hits a, do you just stop where you are or do you step the far right stands of c up into b?
we played you stopped cuz we didnt think it was the same as an impact charge and found no answer on stepping forward on a pursuit of a broken unit. (had to put ....'s or the units all were left justified.

Pursuing is not the same as charging so no you don't step forward. You played it correct you stop when you make contact regardless of extra VMD die roll move you might have.
Now to confuse things, if A somehow made it past C and B while pursuing hit C then it counts as an impact against C but still no stepping forward, so A gets off scot free and C has to deal with it.

I'd check the wording about meeting nes enemy - I have a recollection of words to the effect that it counts as a charge (but I may be wrong) which would, I think, mean stepping forward.

As shown in one of the diagrams in the book. (Possibly titled "Complex Pursuit Move" IIRC, in the Combat Mechanism chapter)

But doesn't the diagram on page 101 show something different to the originally posted question? I think the OP meant can a pursuing BG still in contact with a broken BG step forward to contact a new enemy BG. The diagram shows a pursuing BG contacting a new enemy BG(and so treated as a charge)and then stepping forwards to contact another enemy, which in the diagrams case is the original routing BG.
So there is a difference isn't there?

Yes, spot on, I think.
The problem here is that the OP mixed up terminology: unit broken...evades...break off. so that it is not as obvious as it might be what the actual situation being described is.

The difference is which gets hit first.
1) If the pursuers catch the routers (they were pursuing) first, this is not a new enemy. It is not a charge. No stepping forward.
2) If the routers hit another enemy BG first, this is 'new enemy'. This becomes a charge, stepping forward is compulsory. This may also include a stepping forward into the original routers.

You know it makes sense

Page 101 diagram does state that pursuers who hit new enemy will step forward into their original routing enemy if they contact fresh enemy and can still step forward and contact the routing unit.
Seems I was wrong
Guess they can step forward after all.
