An anonymous source informs yours truly that the new ARW forum that just appeared in Area 51 is for Slitherine's breathtakingly daring new dating sim in the ancient world, with a twist!
Set in Rome during the reign of the infamous Caligula, and narrated by the man who would one day be the emperor Claudius, this audacious new spin on the classic japanese dating sim adds several additional factors which the player must contend with.
In addition to the obvious "get the girls" angle, players will have to contend with the erratic and increasingly bizarre behavior of the emperor Caligula himself. Possible effects here reportedly include -
Fines & taxes - player loses money
Sent abroad on mission - player playes out a mini-game to determine results. Success leads to large rewards and advancement within game, failure leads to penalties up to and possibly including death.
Imperial favorite - player gains popularity, but loses money!
Accused of treason - player must muster a clever legal defense before the emperor himself!
My anonymous informant further tells me that the game economics have a bizarre twist. The richer a player is, the greater his freedom to undertake various game actions, but the greater the risk of an adverse imperial action, as Caligula rapaciously bilks the wealthy of their cash, to fund his lavish entertainments.
Furthermore, there are rumors of possible random events such as a german invasion, or a mutiny among the legions.
On some issues, my informant remains unclear. When asked if the game would be strictly hetero, or whether Caligula's other proclivities would be modeled, the informant sneered and refused to answer.
Well, whatever the details, it's clear that Iain and his merry men have undertaken a bold and daring venture here, one that will expand the genre permanently.
