blacklist

what about the possibility to have a blacklist of people you don't want to play against and who are not able to accept your challenges?

You mean a sort of filter, so that if for instance you set up a game and only wanted a certain person to accept you could?

uh, no, as he states in his post, a filter for people you DON'T want to play against, so that you can post an open challenge so that anyone but the specified people can accept it.

I'd probably rather have a filter for screening out certain armies that I don't want to play against, but this type of filter would also be useful...

If the challenge didn't appear on the blacklisted person's screen, or appeared simply as a normal locked challenge, fair enough. Otherwise it will just breed ill-feeling, which would be a shame.

Openly blacklisting certain armies is fair enough because it merely betrays fear and hatred of that army type. Openly blacklisting a certain player or players carries a bit of an odour.

I confess I don't like playing people who resign without comment, and I'd rather play people who didn't resign at all. People who abandon a game half way through bug me a bit too. And I've had a couple of people do one or all of those things to me more than once. But I'm not sure my openly blacklisting them would do anything for community spirit. And in fact it doesn't annoy me enough for me to want to do that anyway. I avoid their challenges but if they pick up one of mine, I don't mind.

I'm of both minds on your point...while blacklisting has the potential to generate ill-feeling, it might also spur people to ask themselves why they are being blacklisted, especially if multiple people do it, and get them to change the behavior which is pissing people off. Which is better for the community? Dunno...

I would like the option of blacklisting army types on a battle-by-battle basis, and maybe you could only blacklist a few army types so that you couldn't choose to fight the Illyrians every time, etc. I'm not sure how the challenge process would work with this, though, presumably you would have to note the blacklisted armies when you post the challenge, otherwise I'm not sure someone could "unaccept" your challenge if they only wanted to use the blacklisted army.

[EDIT] I'd like some kind of "fix" though, because it seems like there are fewer and fewer open challenges on the board.

I knew what he meant, but I was trying to be nice about it, as I think that having blacklists of players would be pretty spiteful and petty especially if they were openly readable by all players. You could get a situation whereby players are blacklisting each other for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with playing against each other, in fact some may blacklist players they simply don't like from the forum posts, if you get my drift.

Personally I never play against anyone on here that I don't know in person as I have enough friends who play the game to satisfy my needs. Obviously thats not the case for everyone and as Paisley said some people can do annoying things in games, but it cuts both ways and they may feel annoyed too by things that you may not think are annoying. Open blacklists would be a very bad idea, as how would you feel if someone you hadn't even played against blacklisted you, or if you were blacklisted by another player who took offence to something you did or didnt do in a game but which you were oblivious to or didnt think was a bad thing. As you are no doubt well aware from playing this game and posting in the forum, it is all too easy for such things to happen.

As I said, I never play against anyone who isnt a personal friend, so I could only be blacklisted by players who had never played against me, so it wouldnt affect my gaming experience, it would however do little to promote community spirit. Also, who defines what is good or bad behaviour, you? me? who? A filter whereby you can simply ask to play a certain player is one thing, a blacklist by its very implication is bad.

a blacklist need not be public.
as someone has rightly understood, i don't like playing people who resign after 3-4 turns without any apparent reason and without giving any explanation. it occurs and i find it's only a waste of (my) time. not a big problem, but annoying.
also, i agree that open challenges are very rare and as the real beauty of FoG PC is its multiplayer option this is a pity

I never have to wait long for a challenge to be accepted. I think that because you can isse our own open challenges, even if other people are not, there's no problem finding opponents. I've never waited more than an hour or two for one to be accepted.

When you click on a challenge in the multiplayer lobby, you can see if FoW is switched on. It would be very cool if the person setting up the challenge could have maybe 50 characters of free text that could also be displayed, for example "no seleucids or elite romans please" or "no horsey shooty armies please". So you can make it clear what kind of game you want without targeting specific players.

A comment box for challenges would be an excellent idea. I was about to suggest such a thing but for a different reason. In my League I have just realised the difficulty involved in identifying which challenge is for which player since DAG doesn't identify a particular battle and certain armies are repeated but versus different players.

I don't like the blacklist thing. I don't do many open challenges but when I do the funny thing is I normally get people that are new to the game and actually have never ended up playing a recognizable name from the forum. I have not always been happy with the person played, I like some back and forth comments doesn't have to be every turn but just to feel a human is out there. Yet I would replay someone again unless they were obnoxious or rude in the their comments during the game. I save my rudeness for the forum :twisted: not the game.

I mainly put up open challenges and like a bit of a chat while playing. I play against lots of different people and reckon about 95% of them are pleasant and sporting. The ones who resign repeatedly, or without comment, I try to avoid but I don't have too much problem with them picking up a challenge.

For me, open challenges are part of the charm of the game.

I dont think we should be blacklisting any peron or army. If you have a bad experience with some body dont play them again. I think the idea of maybe haveing a text box so that you can stipulate that you dont want to play against a certain army type is a good idea.

Personaly though I dont mind what army type im facing irrespective of the arny i'm using. When the Romans 1st encountered the Parthians and sassinids they had a hard time, but with good generalmanship they eventually found a way to beat them. So in game terms it just means that you have got to think carefully when you are playing. Make the right terrain choise and play to your armies strength. Thats why I enjoy this game...looking for ways to solve a problem just like the Roman generals when they 1st met the Parthians and Sassinids!!

I think the original post was that you cannot stop someone whom you've had a bad experience with from accepting an open challenge which you post.
However I too personally dislike the idea of a blacklist.

It's somethign we'd like to do but is fiddly to set up so is on the long wish list!
