For the list geeks out there :
Which army (well there may be more than one but I doubt it) can have 12 BGs of HF Superior Armoured Offensive Spearmen, at 800 pts ?

And a very nasty dismount it is too...

Early Medieval German gets 12 if you take max cavalry and dismount

Some other interesting dismounts in that book... Anglo-Norman for one, although not quite as good.

Yes, it's an army that only becomes interesting when you read the list notes. I'm going to try it out against my regular opponent this week. He'll get a shock I think...

I think you may be able to have 14. Probably not at 800pts though.

Oh right - I thought the cavalry maxed out at 48 bases?

There are also the Old Saxon, Slav and Thuringian Cavalry, 2 of which are specifically noted as frequently fighting on foot, so I would think they are also covered by the dismount option.

What are the cavalry before they dismount? At work and now and you have made me curious...

There's up to 48 Superior or Average, Armoured or Protected Lance/Swordsmen, plus up to 8 Average, Armoured or Protected Light Spear/Swordsmen.
They dismount as Offensive Spear, Armoured or Protected, what looks a little cheesy is that they all get to be Superior when in pedestrian mode.

Interesting, Arab Conquest can do that trick as well. You can take Protected, Average Lance/sw cavalry which cost exactly the same amount as prot, super, off spear which they dismount as. Gives a nice option to get 4 base spear BGs or if it makes sense you can leave them mounted.
The avarege, armoured are interesting though at what 14AP each? That isn't too bad a premium over what they would cost on foot (12?).
Could imagine something like 2 amoured super (who you mostly plan to leave mounted), 6 armoured average (mostly dismount) and 4 prot average (always dismount, possibly rear support). Certainly I would take 2 of the BGs as lt spear/sw as well.
I mage that as 128 + 336 + 144 = 608 leaving 150AP for generals and 42 for other bits and pieces probably a 12-13BG army.
Interesting.

The average armoured cav are 12 points each. The only difficulty being that a group of 4 HF off spear is not really what you'd want. Too badly affected if it loses a base and too many of them to put generals with them all. Still, far, far better than not being able to dismount of course.

Yes, so there's no premium for dismounting, as the foot troops they dismount at would normally cost 12 points each.
I hadn't realised the Light Spear Cavalry could also dismount, so yes, 14 BGs are available. Makes it even more flexible, as you can decide to keep any number of BGs of either lancers or Light Spear Cav mounted after seeing the opponents deployment.
I think the fact that they are superior and armoured means they would be OK in BGs of 4. They could be taken as 6s though.

Hmmm at 12 AP each for armoured average, could do
2 armoured super (128 AP)
2 armoured average 6 base BG (144AP)
4 armoured averaged 4 base BG (192AP)
4 prot average BG (144AP)
is 608AP and then you have 2 6 base units to dismount.
