Tips on scenario making

I am currently experimenting with the scenario editor and working on my first ever scenario.
Some questions:
What does the retreat direction 0 (default) mean and what effect will changes here have?
How do you decide about a units experience, especially when the sources about a battle are rather vague?
What makes a good/balanced scenario even if the historic battle was not balanced?
How many sub-leaders/allied leaders would you place?
Are there any information/links available on scenario design in RoR?
